Set up your account
This page covers everything on the Account tab in Settings: your AI provider and key, your licence, updates and how PlainSpeak looks.
Open Settings with the gear at the top right. When you have no key yet, or your licence needs attention, Settings opens on Account.
Your AI provider and key
- Choose your Provider. See Choose a model for the options.
- Paste your key into API key.
- For Custom (OpenAI-compatible) only, fill in Base URL: the address your service gives you, such as
https://openrouter.ai/api/v1. Leave off the/chat/completionsending: PlainSpeak adds it. - Select Save.
Your key is stored on your computer and sent only to your provider. We recommend an OpenRouter key with a spending limit.
Your licence
The Licence section shows the state of your licence:
| What it says | What to do |
|---|---|
| Licence and a number, with updates included up to a date | Nothing. You are licensed. |
| Scanning is free, rewriting needs a licence key | Add your key or purchase code below. |
| Your saved licence key is not valid | Paste your key again. |
| Your licence covers versions released up to a date, and this version is newer | Buy a new licence, or reinstall a version your licence covers. |
| Your licence key is for a newer version | Update PlainSpeak. |
To add your licence:
- Paste your licence key, or the purchase code from your Polar receipt email, into Licence key.
- Select Save key. This applies straight away; it does not wait for Save.
Keep both private: do not post them in forums or support threads.
Remove your licence
Select Remove licence, then Remove. Rewriting locks until you add a key or purchase code again. Your purchase is not affected, and the same key or code works again later, for example on a new computer.
Updates
The Account tab shows which version you are using. PlainSpeak checks for updates a few seconds after it starts and every six hours after that, and downloads them by itself.
- When an update is ready, a bell appears at the top right. Select it, then Restart now to install it, or Later. It installs when you quit PlainSpeak either way. Your draft and your History are kept.
- To check now, select Check for updates.
- If an update is newer than your licence covers, PlainSpeak warns you before installing it. If you install it anyway, scanning keeps working but rewriting stays locked until you buy a new licence.
Appearance
Choose System to follow Windows, or Light or Dark, then select Save. The sun and moon button at the top right switches straight away.
Save and Cancel
Changes to your provider, key, appearance, voices and your writing wait until you select Save. Cancel closes Settings without them. Three things apply at once and Cancel does not undo them: licence changes, template edits and the theme button at the top right.
Help and docs on this tab opens these pages.
