Edit and add voices
This page shows you how to change a voice or make your own, on the Voices tab in Settings.
A voice is what the rewrite should sound like. It has two parts:
- Sounds like: one line describing the writer, such as "a plain-spoken colleague talking over coffee".
- Rules override (optional): extra rules for this voice only, which can loosen PlainSpeak's core rules. Most voices leave it empty.
PlainSpeak has four built-in voices: Practitioner, Warm, Direct and Mass audience. See Rewrite your copy.
Add a voice
- Open Settings, then the Voices tab.
- Select New voice, or select Duplicate on a voice to start from it.
- Type a name, up to 40 characters.
- Describe the writer in Sounds like.
- Select Save.
Your voice now appears in the rewrite recipe. Delete one of your own voices with Delete.
Edit a built-in voice
Type into its fields, then select Save. An edited built-in shows built-in ยท edited. To undo your changes, select Reset.
Write a voice that works
Both fields go straight into the instructions the model gets. Treat them as instructions:
- Describe a person, not a style label: "a blunt operations director who hates jargon" works better than "professional".
- Do not contradict the core rules. A Sounds like line that asks for something the rules forbid is obeyed over them. To see the rules every voice sits on, open The core rules every voice sits on at the bottom of the tab.
Back up and share voices
- Export saves all your voices to a file named
plainspeak-voices-and the date. - Import loads a voices file. Then select Save to keep them. Any built-in voice missing from the file is added back.
Voices are stored on your computer, with the rest of your settings.
